University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill (UNC)

The University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill is a public institution that was founded in 1789, and located in North Carolina. The flagship of the University of North Carolina system, it is considered a public ivy, or a university. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 19,117, its setting is suburban, and the campus size is 729 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. The average cost before aid is $23,811, and the average cost after aid is $14,163. The acceptance rate is 24%, and the graduation rate is 90%. UNC is unique in that is has the cosmopolitan feel, diversity, and high academics standards of a private university despite being a public school. Though the majority of students are from North Carolina, it doesn't have a local college/high school part two atmosphere that some state schools have.

Getting into UNC-Chapel Hill takes hard work, last year only 21.9% of applicants were admitted. UNC-Chapel Hill received 43,473 applications last year and admitted 9,524 students. If you are a North Carolina resident, you're in a bit of luck, because UNC-Chapel Hill has a preference for in-state students. You will need exceptionally good grades to get into UNC at Chapel Hill. The average high school GPA of the admitted freshman class at UNC at Chapel Hill was 4.6 on the 4.0 scale indicating that primarily A students are accepted and ultimately attend. UNC-Chapel Hill requires either an SAT or ACt for all first-year applicants and sophomore transfer applicants. Please note that the writing portion of either the SAT or ACT is no longer required nor recommended. Additionally, they don't have a preference for one test over the other, so you may submit either score or both. The average ACT score is 30. The 25th percentile ACT score is 27, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 33. In other words, a 27 places you below average, while a 33 will move ou up to above average. There's no absolute ACT requirement at UNC, but they really want to see at least a 27 to have a chance. The average composite for the SAT is 1395, the average reading&writing section is 690, and the average math section is 705. The 75th percentile composite score is 1470, the reading&writing is 730, and the 75th percentile math section is 760.

The most popular majors at UNC-Chapel Hill include Social Sciences; Biological and Biomedical Sciences; Communication, Journalism, and Related Programs; Psychology; and Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services.

UNC-Chapel Hill reported 1,041 safety-related incidents involving students on or near campus or other UNC-Chapel Hill affiliated properties in 2018. Of the 4,210 colleges and universities that reported crime and safety data, 4,170 of them reported fewer incidents than this.
